Background of the Study
Masquerade festivals, steeped in cultural symbolism and ritualistic practices, serve as vital communal events that reinforce identity and psychological cohesion in Idemili North. These festivals offer a platform for the expression of collective cultural heritage, facilitating social bonding and reinforcing community values (Okafor, 2023). Participation in masquerade traditions not only preserves cultural narratives but also fosters a sense of belonging and pride among community members (Nwogu, 2024). The vibrant displays of art, music, and ritual during these festivals contribute to psychological well-being by reducing social isolation and promoting emotional solidarity (Chima, 2025). However, the commercialization and modernization of these traditions may undermine their authentic cultural significance, leading to a potential erosion of community identity. This study critically examines the role of masquerade festivals in shaping community identity and enhancing psychological cohesion, evaluating both their traditional value and contemporary challenges.
Statement of the Problem
In Idemili North, the commercialization of masquerade festivals poses challenges to maintaining their cultural authenticity and their role in fostering community identity. While these festivals are central to reinforcing social cohesion and psychological well-being, modern influences risk diluting their traditional significance. This dissonance may lead to weakened communal bonds and reduced psychological resilience among community members. Addressing this issue requires an examination of the evolving nature of masquerade festivals and their impact on community identity and mental health (Okafor, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:

To evaluate the role of masquerade festivals in shaping community identity.

To assess the impact of these festivals on psychological cohesion.

To recommend measures to preserve traditional values amidst modernization.
Research Questions:

How do masquerade festivals contribute to community identity in Idemili North?

What is the impact of these festivals on psychological cohesion?

What strategies can preserve the traditional significance of masquerade festivals?
Research Hypotheses:

Masquerade festivals significantly enhance community identity.

Active participation in festivals correlates with higher psychological cohesion.

Preservation strategies can mitigate the adverse effects of commercialization.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the crucial role of masquerade festivals in maintaining community identity and psychological cohesion. The insights derived will guide cultural preservation efforts and policy development in Idemili North, ensuring that modernization does not compromise traditional values (Nwogu, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating the impact of masquerade festivals on community identity and psychological cohesion in Idemili North Local Government Area, focusing solely on cultural and psychological dimensions.
Definitions of Terms:

Masquerade Festivals: Traditional cultural events featuring masked performances and ritualistic displays.

Community Identity: The shared sense of belonging and cultural uniqueness among a group.
